Apr 01 , 2010

Achieves the target through its campaign in 9 cities of the country i.e. Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jamshedpur, Lonavla, Pune, Belagum, Bangalore and Kolkata

“Tata Power Energy Club; a unique energy conservation programme was started 3 years back as a proactive effort to curb the wasteful usage of power and educate the society on the importance of energy conservation.

Started in Mumbai in 2007, the “Tata Power Energy Club”, today has awakened the citizens across 9 major cities in the country on the need to conserve energy. In 2009-10, schools in cities such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Jamshedpur, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune, Belgaum and Lonavla; were identified in order to achieve the target of sensitizing ONE million citizens.
In every city, the response to Tata Power Energy Club has been tremendous and heartening. The programme which was initially targeted towards school children also saw participation from other communities such as housing societies, colleges, customers in Mumbai and youth bodies like Rotary Club of Mumbai, who rendered full support and participated in this unique movement through their suggestions, ideas and efforts to save energy.

Today, “Tata Power Energy Club” has sensitized over ONE MILLION CITIZENS (10 LAKH) across the country and this number is only increasing! These 1 million citizens have been sensitized to create awareness about energy conservation making it a strong nationwide movement bringing together the youth, parents, teachers and the society at large! The club has a covered a total of 250 schools across the cities and has helped save 1080685 units.

The year 2009-10 saw the programme receiving 13550 Energy champions across the various cities and proved as an inspiration to other students. Currently, the programme received 31094 energy ambassadors across the targeted cities.

Speaking on the achievement, Mr. Prasad Menon, Managing Director, Tata Power said, Three years ago, we started out with Tata Power Energy Club to spread the message of Energy Conservation in Mumbai. And today, it’s heartening to note that we have sensitized over 1 million people across the nation, who in turn have saved more than 1 million units. From the time we grew national in 2009, we have been racing past deadlines to make more and more citizens pledge to save power.  This phenomenal success of reaching out with a cause would not have been possible without the efforts of all our club members.

My hearty congratulations to the young harbingers who have driven this movement on energy conservation. I would also like to thank the teachers and parents who have given tremendous support to these young champions. Through these combined efforts, I am very sure we will take this movement of energy conservation to even higher levels of success and help create a cleaner and emission free environment."

The Club has also embarked on a new vehicle of imparting energy education with its Energy Book titled ‘Watts up with Energy’ which will be launched soon.  Along with CERE who have diligently researched, authored and visualized this book, we have reached a new level in our endeavour to impart knowledge about energy conservation. With this book, all of you can find exciting new ways of conserving energy and building a greener tomorrow.

AboutTata Power Energy Club’ (TPEC):

The Tata Power Energy Club started with educating and sensitizing school children, comprising several schools across Mumbai, Belgaum and other locations to spark off a youth initiative for curbing energy wastage through active measures. More than 11,660 children sensitized in 28 schools were encouraged to spread the word amongst their neighbourhoods in an attempt to create awareness about this issue. The participants who managed to show the maximum savings in their electricity bills or who reached out to a large number of people were felicitated as ‘Energy Champions’.

The initiative taken by the young kids resulted in the total number of sensitized “Mumbaikars” standing at 38,000 in the academic year 2008-2009! In 2009-10, over 1 million citizens have been sensitized so far in an attempt to create awareness about energy conservation making it a strong nationwide movement bringing together the youth, parents, teachers and the society at large! The club has a covered a total 250 schools across the cities and with their efforts have helped save 1080685 units.

TPEC provides the ground for children to share and expand their understanding, and bring about a chain-reaction that can significantly reduce wastage of energy in the city. With adequate publicity, the Club will sensitize Mumbai’s citizens, and the spark can turn into a spreading flame of enthusiasm to protect our resources and environment.
