Tata Power's Club Enerji students sensitized on Mahseer conservation Jan 05, 2017

Tata Power organises visit to Mahseer hatchery in Lonavala

Tata power, India’s largest integrated power company works endlessly to contribute towards the all-inclusive growth and development of children. In line with this commitment, Tata Power organised and hosted a Mahseer Hatchery visit for Club Enerji students under its ‘Act for Mahseer’ initiative at Walwhan, Lonavala.

The objective of this initiative was to sensitise awareness amongst school students on the Mahseer Conservation. Approximately 40 students participated from St. Lawrence High School, Kandivali East and St. Xavier’s High School to break the monotony of classroom learning and exposed children to experiential education. In the tour of the Mahseer hatchery, children were explained the various conservation methods to save this mighty fish along with the reasons for it being endangered. All attendees were shown the various life stages of Mahseer; from eggs to fingerlings and finally a fish.

Speaking on the visit, Mr. Mahesh Paranjape, Chief - Corporate Ops (Hydro & RO), Tata Power, stated, “We, at Tata Power are very passionate about our “Act for Mahseer” initiative and it was started even before ecological problems had become a concern. With the given environmental conditions, we believe that it is of utmost importance that children imbibe such values in their system that sustainable development is not only discussed as an ideal situation but evolves into practicality. We are delighted to see the excitement and curiosity in children as they learn about the need to save Mahseer fishes. I would like to thank all students and teachers from both schools for co-operating and taking interest in this initiative. We will continue to organise such initiatives in the future as well.”

‘Act for Mahseer’ is a call to action public campaign aimed at spreading awareness about the mighty Mahseer to help preserve this valuable fish species in a big way at the national level. The programme has been launched with a three-pronged approach to educate, engage and empower Mahseer lovers. The first visit witnessed an overwhelming response from the students. The initiative will further reinforce Tata Power’s commitment towards educational initiatives in its operational areas and will help in strengthening relationship with its communities.
