Recognizing the need to curb wastage of energy, Tata Power’s national energy conservation movement “Tata Power Energy Club”, the school outreach programme is now supporting The Earth Hour which is the world’s largest environmental campaign. The Earth Hour will begin from 8:30 - 9:30pm on March 26, 2011 and will be staged in Mumbai, Jamshedpur and Bangalore in India. The essence of this program is to spread the message to save power by switching-off non essential lights and appliances when not in use.
In an endeavor to contribute to the novel initiative, Mini Tata Power Energy Clubs had already started a mock participation through their engagements in 6 schools across cities to spread awareness about Earth Hour. The efforts have resulted as in attracting a wide audience and helped create awareness about Earth Hour 2011.
Some of the Tata Power Energy Club led initiatives:
- St. Mary School – Arranged for banners, write ups on the community board and door-to-door campaign in the school premises
- Sir J.J. Boys School, Fort and Rizvi Springfield School, Bandra - Organized ‘nukkad nataks’ or street plays in front of their school and near Globus, Bandra respectively
- Sheth GH High School - Organized a society sensitization programme to encourage residents to switch off their lights and ‘vote for the Earth
- ADLS Sunshine School, Jamshedpur - Conducted a 2.5 km rally on 22nd March 2011 to sensitize citizens about energy conservation and Earth Hour
- Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Bangalore- Organized a ‘candle light dinner’ in the campus where all the non-essential lights and electrical appliances on the residential campus were switched off to mark the hour
- St. Xavier’s College Energy Champions influence Yugadharma Housing Society residents in Malad to switch off their power in support of the initiative

Tata Power’s Energy Club has been taking initiatives and being pro active for the last 5years in saving Electricity and has also won an International award this year as the most Innovative campaign with respect to energy saving. In 2010-11, Tata Power Energy Club had sensitized over 2.5 lakh children across 285 schools nationwide. These children had further reached out to more than eight lakh people, thereby taking the total sensitization figure to over 1 (One) million citizens. The club members have collectively saved 1,822,560 units of electricity.
