More SALES, more PROFIT; despite having this being the business mantra in today’s commercial world, last year, Tata Power propagated “Energy Conservation’ to the citizen of Mumbai through a unique and innovative program under the aegis of ‘Tata Power Energy Club’-an informal Energy Conservation Club comprising Schools and Schoolchildren for curbing energy-wastage through active measures.
With the resounding success of this school contact programme, ‘Tata Power Energy Club’ now introduces “MEGAWATT MILLIONAIRE”, the first of its kind one year engagement program for Energy Champions that starts with a day long workshop i.e. Power Kids League on 26th May 2009. Organized at Tata Power’s Carnac receiving station this workshop aims to engage its harbingers “Energy Champions” to the next level i.e. facilitating secondary energy conservation and sensitization of other children and citizens by these trained champions.
“MEGAWATT MILLIONAIRE” - "I make the difference", the year long programme will train the top performers of last year and lays Impetus to educate, sensitize and empower the kids with tools and techniques that will enable them to spread awareness on the need for conserving power and to practise energy conservation themselves.
This workshop will further encourage them to influence peer groups (i.e. their neighbors, friends and family) to practise energy conservation. The primary objective of this programme is to maximize the reach targeting citizens across Mumbai through a direct contact and ripple effect of already sensitized children.
Tata Power has always demonstrated the group’s ethos of ‘Giving back to the Society’. Keeping this in mind, Tata Power had introduced the ‘Conservation Programme’ in various schools in the metropolis with a primary objective to create awareness and educate the school children on the various methods of electricity conservation. ‘Tata Power Energy Club’ was formed to curb the energy wastage through various active measures.
Speaking on the initiative Mr. Prasad Menon, Managing Director, The Tata Power Company Limited, said, “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s future. We at Tata Power believe that awareness yields the desired impact when it’s initiated at the grass root level; thereby creating the maximum impact. The ‘Tata Power Energy Club’ aims at not only curbing wastage and bringing down energy wastage but also spread the message in family and neighborhood. In order to better equip these young evangelists it’s important that we provide necessary training and support to these youngsters and ‘Megawatt Millionaire’ is our way of doing it.”

About ‘Tata Power Energy Club’ (TPEC):
The Tata Power Energy Club started with educating and sensitizing school children, comprising several schools across Mumbai, Belgaum and other locations to spark off a youth initiative for curbing energy wastage through active measures. More than 11,660 children sensitized in 28 schools were encouraged to spread the word amongst their neighbourhoods in an attempt to create awareness about this issue. The participants who managed to show the maximum savings in their electricity bills or who reached out to a large number of people were felicitated as ‘Energy Champions’.
The initiative taken by the young kids resulted in the total number of sensitized “Mumbaikars” standing at a whooping 38,000 in the academic year 2008-2009! The next step in this mission is to mobilize the College going students who will be able to take on the cause more vociferously and proactively. Tata Power looks at setting in a motion a movement which could well help lead to a better tomorrow for not just citizens of Mumbai but of the country.
It is an Energy Conservation initiative that focuses on bringing about a first-hand realization of the energy crisis in Mumbai City and the country at large, through the enterprise and creativity of our youth!
TPEC provides the ground for children to share and expand their understanding, and bring about a chain-reaction that can significantly reduce wastage of energy in the city. With adequate publicity, the Club will sensitize Mumbai’s citizens, and the spark can turn into a spreading flame of enthusiasm to protect our resources and environment.
