Ignoring commercial gains in today’s highly competitive business environment and leading the way for the a cleaner and greener environment, Tata Power had propagated “Energy Conservation campaign” to the average citizen through a unique and innovative program under the aegis of ‘Tata Power Energy Club’ to bring about the much needed awareness of energy conservation.
The ‘Tata Power Energy Club’, comprising schools and schoolchildren to curb energy-wastage through active measures, today reached the critical mass of sensitizing ONE lakh citizens across 4 major cities in India i.e. Mumbai, Pune, Delhi & Ahmedabad and is racing towards its eventual goal of ONE Million citizens as planned, by 2010.
The “Conservation Programme” piloted in 2007 with 12 schools in Mumbai and which was extended to 27 schools, has now reached a laudable target of 100 schools in across Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Pune.
Speaking on the achievement, Mr. Prasad Menon, Managing Director, Tata Power, “The achievement of one lakh sensitization is proud moment for us. We are committed towards creating a cleaner and emission free environment. We strongly believe that “Tata Power Energy Club” will play an important role through these young harbingers who have proved themselves as strong influencers in conserving our environment and saving energy”.
In the year 2009 – 10, the programme received its first 5 Energy champions in Mumbai, who did a commendable job of saving more than 500 units and sensitizing more than 400 people in a very short span of time. Their efforts were well appreciated and proved as an inspiration to other students. Currently, the programme received 1804 energy ambassadors across the targeted cities, of which 1108 ambassadors were from Mumbai alone.
This year, in the first six months of the campaign, Tata Power had succeeded in sensitizing 10,555 students in Mumbai through the introduction of “Megawatt Millionaire” - a programme initiated to train the champions who further broaden the sensitization process to their family, friends, neighborhood etc, in order to spread the awareness of energy conservation.
After the huge success in Mumbai, this programme was rolled out nationally, where schools in cities like Delhi, Jamshedpur, Ahmedabad and Pune are identified in order to achieve the first set target of sensitizing ONE million citizens by 2010.
About Megawatt Millionaire - "I make the difference":
Megawatt Millionaire is the umbrella programme for children started by Tata Power Energy Club and is a one year programme on secondary energy conservation sensitization by trained champions. The programme attempts to educate, sensitize and empower the kids with tools and techniques to spread awareness on the need for conserving power and to practice energy conservation themselves. They will encourage their influence group to practice energy conservation. The objective of this programme is to maximize reach to Mumbai citizens through a direct contact and ripple effect of already sensitized children.
About Power Kids League:
Power Kids League is a series of day long fun filled workshops where we conduct intensive sessions on energy conservation, energy efficiency, communication and leadership skills etc and train groups of energy champions on how to become a 'Megawatt Millionaire'. The workshop also includes a lot of interactive games in which the children can participate and win prizes.
About ‘Tata Power Energy Club’ (TPEC):
The Tata Power Energy Club started with educating and sensitizing school children, comprising several schools across Mumbai, Belgaum and other locations to spark off a youth initiative for curbing energy wastage through active measures. More than 11,660 children sensitized in 28 schools were encouraged to spread the word amongst their neighbourhoods in an attempt to create awareness about this issue. The participants who managed to show the maximum savings in their electricity bills or who reached out to a large number of people were felicitated as ‘Energy Champions’.
The initiative taken by the young kids resulted in the total number of sensitized “Mumbaikars” standing at 38,000 in the academic year 2008-2009! The next step in this mission is to mobilize the College going students who will be able to take on the cause more vociferously and proactively. Tata Power looks at setting in a motion a movement which could well help lead to a better tomorrow for not just citizens of Mumbai but of the country.
It is an Energy Conservation initiative that focuses on bringing about a first-hand realization of the energy crisis in Mumbai City and the country at large, through the enterprise and creativity of our youth!
TPEC provides the ground for children to share and expand their understanding, and bring about a chain-reaction that can significantly reduce wastage of energy in the city. With adequate publicity, the Club will sensitize Mumbai’s citizens, and the spark can turn into a spreading flame of enthusiasm to protect our resources and environment.
