The demand for ENERGY in Mumbai and other parts of the country is ever increasing, but the supply to meet this rising demand is limited and in fact in some cases difficult. ‘Energy Conservation’ therefore is the need of the hour.
Six months back Tata Power took the lead to bring about the much needed change amongst people’s approach through Energy Conservation, a unique campaign.
The company introduced the ‘Conservation Programme’ in various schools in the metropolis with a primary objective to create awareness and educate the school children on the various methods of electricity conservation. ‘Tata Power Energy Club’ was formed to curb the energy wastage through various active measures.
The company developed an interactive website for the students and created a mascot Mr. ENER-JI; who intends to engage youth as energy savers, reduce power wastage and protect our resources and environment.
The programme was implemented in 12 prominent schools in Mumbai on a pilot basis. It eventually succeeded in sentising and reaching to 27 schools in Mumbai and by the end of six months Tata Power achieved a commendable figure of 10,555, through the school sensitization initiative in Mumbai alone. The Conservation Porgramme was also replicated in other towns like Jamshedpur, Delhi and Belgaum, thereby taking the first steps towards making the initiative at the national level.
On January 22, 2009, a meet was organized to felicitate the ‘Energy Champions’ i.e. students who had done an exceptional job of propagating the message of ‘Conservation’ not just in their homes and but also played a key role in influencing and motivating their immediate surroundings i.e. housing societies, class mates etc. to take part in the ‘Energy Conservation’ drive.
A total of 272 ‘Energy Champions’ and the Mentors (namely their school teachers who guided them) participated in the event, with each of the ‘Energy Champions’ and Mentors being felicitated for their efforts in propagating the initiative and making it grand success.
These ‘Energy Champions’ have in turn sensitized over 20000 people in the city, taking the initiative to newer heights and now aims a sensitization target of over 1,00,000 in the 2nd year, when the campaign goes full steam at the national level.
The students and their mentors shared their experiences during the event. The senior management of the Tata Power Company Limited applauded the young minds and encouraged them to continue the spirit shown by each one of them.
A simple yet effective interactive session by Mr. Avinash Patkar, Chief Sustainability Officer, Tata Power, also helped the students and their mentors understand the most current issue plaguing the environment, i.e. Global Warming, Carbon Footprints, depletion of fossil fuels etc. Dr. Patkar also explained the concept of carbon foot print, how individuals can measure the same and then relate the same with growing climate change in their surrounding.
Students from Bai B. S. Bengallee Girls’ High School, Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School, Bombay Scottish School, Cathedral and John Connon School, Chatrabhuj Narsee Memorial School, Christ Church School, Green Lawns High School, Hasanat High School, Hiranandana Foundation School, J. B. Petit High School, Jamnabhai Narsee School, Jasudben M. L. School, Kapol Vidyanidhi International School, Lady Engineer High School, Learner’s Academy, Lokhandwala Foundation School, Maharashtra High School, Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School, Queen Mary School, Seth Juggilal Podar Academy, Springfield High School, St. Joseph’s Convent High School, J. Tata Power’s ‘Conservation Programme’ aims not only at bringing down energy consumption in the students’ household but also spread the message in their neighborhood. The Energy Champions will later be taken to a guided tour to the TATA Power plant to absorb the enormity of the operations and resources involved in generating power.
Apart from this significant contribution that Tata Power is making to curb the energy wastage; conservation of fossil fuels reserves and mitigating emission of greenhouse gases that lead to global warming and climate change, are the other initiatives undertaken by the company.
