The demand for ENERGY in Mumbai and other cities is hitting the roof and the ever increasing supply deficit makes ‘Energy Conservation’ a need of the hour. Targeting a unique audience which will get the maximum impact amongst the citizens of the Mumbai and other parts of the country, Tata Power has taken its ‘Energy Conservation Programme’ to various schools in the metropolis, to create awareness and educate school children on the various methods of electricity conservation.
Recognizing the immense value that schools and schoolchildren can bring to the initiative, the campaign believes in involving the youths, the decision makers of tomorrow, who will play a vital role in not only propagating efficient usage of energy but also furthering the larger cause of educating the society on climate change issues and helping building a greener and safer tomorrow.
This initiative was kick-started in Mumbai last year as a pilot with twelve (12) prominent schools such as Bombay International, Beacon high School, Springfield High School, Jamnabai Narsee, Stanislaus, Arya Vidya Mandir, Rustomjee Cambridge International, Donbosco, St. Joseph’s, Carmel Convent, J.B. Petit and Cumballa Hill High School. Approximately 6000 school children last year underwent the first phase of the programme wherein the sensitization process of the students to prepare them as “Energy Conservation Champions” was undertaken and the Second phase, which required them to go into their school community and neighborhood as “Energy Conservation Ambassadors” spread and advocate the need to save energy.
Riding on the success of the programme; the initiative is being further extended to reach out to 25 more schools in Mumbai and other towns like Jamshedpur, Delhi, Belgaum across the country and around its operation areas to make Energy Conservation a national movement in the days to come.
Speaking on the initiative Mr. Prasad R. Menon, Managing Director –Tata Power said., “The ‘Energy Conservation Programme’ driven by us is not a one-time activity as it intends to refresh and reinforce the spirit of wastage elimination, efficiency improvement and cost reduction already in use by the consumers. One of the key goals of this programme is to teach the youth; how to ensure power demand shortfalls can be met through wastage reduction and efficiency improvements rather than by load shedding.”
In order to make the initiative a success its important that the people who train the young minds i.e. Principals and Heads of the educational institutions are taken on board for their belief and supported as they not only will encourage the young minds but play a supervisory role, monitor the program.
Interactive session through, In-class Educational Film and Presentation are undertaken to reinforce the content and assess the integration of thought into action, school children are trained understand basic such as:
- Interpretation of electricity bills
- Basic steps that will help curb wastage of power at home, school and society with the help of Energy Audits and Energy Calculators.
- Optimizing the use of electrical gadgets / devices at home with the participation of family members.
- Recording and sharing the effective practices adopted and results within their immediate circle
The initiative aims not only at bringing down energy consumption in their homes but also spread the message in their neighborhood. These students form the Energy Brigade, are later taken to a guided tour to the TATA Power plant to absorb the enormity of the operations and resources involved in generating power.
TATA Power has taken the program a step ahead and developed an Interactive website http://www.tatapowerenergyclub.com to form a club of this ENERGY BRIGADE where in
